Almost every electric bill calculator asks for two numbers, your usage and your rate, multiplies them, and returns a total. Then the real bill arrives higher, and it is not close.

The arithmetic was never wrong. The model was. A bill is not one rate times one quantity. It is a supply half priced per kWh, a delivery half also priced per kWh, and a fixed charge that does not care how much you used. The calculator above takes all three and shows you the estimate broken into them, because the parts explain the total in a way the total never explains itself.

What you need before you start

Four numbers, and three of them are on any recent bill:

  • Expected usage in kWh. For a forward estimate the safest source is the same calendar month last year, since a January and a July are different animals in the same house.
  • Your supply rate in cents per kWh. On the supply or generation section. This is the number suppliers advertise and the number you can change.
  • Your delivery rate in cents per kWh. On the delivery or distribution section. Add the per-kWh lines together: distribution, transmission and any per-kWh riders.
  • The fixed monthly charge in dollars. Often called the customer charge, basic service charge or service charge.

If a rate is printed in dollars, 0.0844 for example, multiply by 100 before entering it. The calculator will stop and tell you if a rate arrives under a cent per kWh, because that mistake understates a bill by a factor of a hundred and a confident wrong total is worse than no total.

Why your estimate is higher than rate times kWh

This is the part the single-rate calculators cannot show you.

The supply half is the advertised half. It is the energy itself. It is competitive, it is what a retail supplier sells, and it is the only figure most people can quote about their own electricity.

The delivery half is the half nobody quotes. Poles, wires, substations, the meter, the fixed customer charge, taxes and riders. It is set by a tariff filed with your state regulator, and no supplier can change it. Switching suppliers moves the first half and leaves the second exactly where it was.

On a typical residential bill the delivery half plus the fixed charge runs somewhere near a third of the total. So a calculator that multiplies usage by the supply rate is not slightly optimistic, it is missing a structural chunk of the bill.

Two consequences fall straight out of that:

  1. A quoted rate is not a price per kWh. Enter your numbers above and compare the quoted supply rate against the all-in cents per kWh the calculator reports. The gap is the delivery half, and it belongs in any comparison you make between offers.
  2. Cutting usage does not cut the bill proportionally. The fixed charge is untouched by conservation. Halve your kWh and the customer charge is still there, which is also why a light month always shows a higher price per kWh than a heavy one.

How to calculate an electric bill by hand

If you want to check the arithmetic yourself:

Bill = (kWh x supply rate) + (kWh x delivery rate) + fixed charge

Work the rates in dollars, so 8.44 cents becomes 0.0844. Then to see what you are really paying:

All-in cents per kWh = (bill x 100) / kWh

That second line is the one worth writing down. It is the only figure that lets you compare one month against another, or one address against another, without being misled by the half of the bill that never gets advertised.

What this estimate leaves out

Honesty about the edges, since the edges are where estimates fail:

  • Taxes and local riders are not added. They vary by municipality and utility, and guessing at them would make the total look more authoritative than it is. If you know your effective tax rate, add it to the total yourself.
  • Tiered and time-of-use rates are averaged away. If your utility charges more above a usage threshold, or prices energy by the hour, a single supply rate is an approximation. It will be in the neighborhood, not on the nose.
  • Demand charges are not modelled. If your bill has a line priced in kW rather than kWh, you are on a demand-billed rate and part of your bill is set by your worst interval, not by your usage at all. That has its own arithmetic: see demand charges.
  • Nothing here is a forecast of your usage. You supply the kWh. The calculator prices it. It does not predict what your weather, your habits or your equipment will do.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my actual bill higher than this estimate? The three usual causes, in order of frequency: taxes and riders, which are excluded above; a billing period longer than a calendar month, since a 33 day cycle carries more days of usage than a 28 day one; and usage that ran above what you entered. Check the service dates on the bill before you suspect the rate.

Why is my bill high when my usage did not change? Either a rate changed or the mix did. Supply rates reset on a schedule that varies by utility and supplier, and delivery rates change when a tariff is refiled. Enter last month's usage with this month's rates and you can see how much of the increase is price rather than consumption.

How much does the fixed charge really matter? More than its size suggests, in a light month. A customer charge of about seventeen dollars on 900 kWh adds under two cents per kWh. The same charge on 250 kWh adds nearly seven. Nothing about your behaviour changed, only what the fixed cost was spread across.

Can I use this for a business bill? For a small commercial account billed purely on energy, yes. For anything with a kW demand line, no. Demand pricing is driven by a single peak interval and cannot be reconstructed from monthly kWh.

Does this send my numbers anywhere? No. The arithmetic runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored, and there is nothing here to buy.
